First of all, there is no shop to buy the SIM card in Sandakan Airport, the nearest place is 7/11 which is in 5 min by taxi. Next stage of the quest is that you will need to ask someone to share the Wi-Fi with you since you must register your SIM card by yourself online. Perhaps, buying the SIM card in Kota Kinabalu will be the best option. If you are going to Sukau area, do not consider buying U Mobile SIM card - it will not work there completely. I would not recommend to have a food at any of restaurants at the seafront: meals will be overpriced and in most of the cases not even edible. Tours to Bornean bear and orangutan parks will be at least 3x cheaper for you than suggested by TripAdvisor if you will just use Grab taxi to reach it: both parks are located at the same place. Firefly tour is also costly and not really impressive: do not expect to see too much, if you cannot resist to go there. Pasir Putih Beach could be nice place if the beach was visible under the layers of garbage. Don't recommend to waste your time for it. There are a lot of beggar kids at the central area. I don't know if they can steal anything, but I guess it makes sense to be careful.

Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm. It is OK and you can find a small number of nice enough places to eat and drink, if you set your mind to it. I would not want to have stayed there more than one day and I won’t be going back anytime soon.

We used Sandakan as the gateway to Turtle Island and the Kinabatangan River. We had lunch in a central hotel which was fine, not a lot for vegetarians but the service was good. We could have spent a little longer there, it seems easy to get around.

Great little town, wouldn’t spend more than a day or two here unless you were using as a base to go and see the orangutans and rainforest discovery centre or island tours. Great water front dinners. Shopping mall and grocery store close to water front. Nice vibe.

It’s my home town and I have lots of fond memories. Fresh seafood paradise and amazing mixed cuisine with traditional Chinese, Malaysian food and Indian dishes. Everything in the food market is super cheap and fresh. The town centre is looking undeveloped and unloved.

Not much to do in the town or much to see and nowhere very nice places to eat/drink. Unfortunately it is quite run down so book a decent hotel to stay in and make the most of the experiences available in the area.

Apartment was spacious. Host provided all basic necessities for the 2 bedrooms and a kitchen. Security was pretty good. Contact with the host was provided. Washing machine was working great. While we were there in the first few days the host installed WiFi Internet. It worked great. It was nice to have a rice cooker and electric kettle in the kitchen. Balcony had a nice view and had a drying rack for our Laundry.

The staff was/is extremely friendly and helpful as someone already mentioned 12 out of 10 in the ranking. Bobot our guide needs a special mentioning, very knowledgeable about the animals, and a fun person to be with. The driver to got us to the Lodge SAHA, already explained a lot about Sabah and the Lodge, very helpful. It should be mentioned, you are in a Lodge in the middle of nowhere, don't expect.a 5star Hotel

Hotel is very modern, rooms like new and whole place is spotless. Staff are brilliant, let us check about 6 hours early on 2 separate stays. They open the door for you. Tasty buffet breakfast with lots of choices included. Best hotel I've stayed in Malaysia. I'm surprised doesn't have a higher score/rating. Loads of eating places 5 mins walk away is a bonus. Pool also clean and great to cool off.

Location : Very convenient location as the hotel just in front of Sandakan Market & at the back of Harbour Mall. Near to Waterfront Seafood Restaurant. All in walking distance, super convenient.

The staff was incredibly nice and accommodating. I work remote and after getting to the resort, found out the wifi didn’t work and I had no cell service (U mobile has no coverage here). the wonderful hotel staff let me use their hotspots so I could get work done. the price seems high for the area, but it was clean, the food was good, and the river was close.

Large clean, well air-conditioned, comfortable room and bathroom. Nice pool. Excellent food for dinner and breakfast in restaurant. We were impacted by the eruption of an Indonesian volcano - the hotel staff were very helpful in resolving issues with our flight out, ensuring in the end that we were able to make our onward connections to return home.

Booking.com service very bad. I’m badly disappointed with you. I’ve paid for the apartment and when we arrived at Sandakan, the receptionist told me that the unit is not available! I’ve travell all the way from Kota Kinabalu with my family, and we have to spend that night at nearby Petronas station because there is no hotel available to check in.

My room was what I needed: a place to rest before and after a rainforest adventure. Hot shower, nice bed and a working airconditioner. Location is perfect. There are plenty of restaurants nearby, a coin laundry right next to hotel's front door (very good after the rainforest!). Hotel is located in the heart of Sandakan.

Simple, no frills, comfortable hotel. Bonus lovely view of the sea. Nice enough breakfast. We stayed here for one night after arriving in Borneo, before heading off for a 3 day jungle stay, and it did the job well. We were able to leave our bags in the hotel storage while we were away which was super convenient.
